Edinburgh, UK – opening at the City Art Centre this November, POP LIFE and Through Line explore diverse artistic practices and themes, from the intersection of popular culture and figurative drawing, to the celebration of line as a unifying element across mediums. Both exhibitions serve as forums for contemplation and discourse, inviting viewers to engage with the ever-changing dynamics of art within society.
POP LIFE

‘POP LIFE’ underscores the enduring allure of the human form as a reflection of identity and societal norms, drawing inspiration from art history, socio-political movements and cultural shifts over the past six decades.
Including works by Scottish and International artists, many exhibiting in Scotland for the first time, POP LIFE explores the intersection of popular culture and contemporary figurative drawing, challenging traditional distinctions between high and low art. Referencing diverse cultural influences including music, film, fashion, literature, social media and celebrities, the works spotlight this interplay, using familiar language to explore themes that expand traditional drawing practices.
‘POP LIFE’ is a travelling exhibition, previously shown in Sweden (2022-23) and the Netherlands (2023). It is co-curated by artists Euan Gray and Witte Wartena, and is adapted from previous iterations to include Scottish artists.

Through Line
Saturday 9 November 2024 – Sunday 2 March 2025
‘Through Line’ marks the culmination of a series of four group exhibitions at the City Art Centre, spotlighting contemporary art and craft practice in Scotland. It features work by nine artists - David Connearn, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Andrew Lamb, Charles Poulsen, Frances Priest, Lara Scobie, Susan Mowatt, Rhona Taylor and Michael Walton.
Spanning an array of artistic mediums including ceramics, drawing, jewellery, painting, printmaking, poetry and textiles, the ‘through line’ or common visual thread of this show is the use and exploration of line in the artists’ diverse practices. The exhibition looks at the beauty and versatility of the line - from the simplicity of a single stroke to intricate linear patterns - and the impact it can have on our visual experiences.
